Message from the President

Assalamu alaikum was rahmatullahi wa barakathahu!

As you are well aware, USMAA is now 21 years old. The questions are: Where are we? What do we want to do? Where do we want to go?

Last year, as an Association, we almost said bye, bye to USMAA. But we managed alhamdulillah to get together a (mostly) young and vibrant group to form the Management Committee and to carry on the good work that we have done in the past.

Looking forward, the focus of the Management Committee this year has been to establish a better structure within USMAA. The main objective of the structure is to have a model that can be easily followed by successive Management Committees and will serve the ongoing needs and expectations of our members, member families and friends. The model will also give comfort to those who wish to join 'Team USMAA' in the years to come, insha Allah. The basic idea is to keep it all simple.

Whilst installing the correct structures and programs in place we must also focus on the people who are best suited to run those programs. That is why we need to go searching for the right people within our community. So, if and when you get a tap on your shoulder do not hesitate to volunteer. You will enjoy community work if you do it all for the sake of Allah.

What the Main Committee proposes to finalise this year, insha Allah, is to draw up an USMAA Manual of Operations which will:

  • identify the functions, events and activities that we normally conduct every year;
  • put it into a better and or improved format;
  • identify and invite the right people to run the Program on an ongoing basis; and most importantly
  • Find volunteers within the community to adopt one of these programs in which they will get fully involved every year (spend some time, money, expertise, knowledge).

If we were to follow the above course of action it will ensure that:

  • the Main Committee will have time and the resources to run the Association efficiently and cater to the wider requirements and expectations of the members;
  • and
  • the wider community will participate in all of the activities and contribute some of their time and effort in organising and conducting at least one function or event every year. You can choose which event or function you want to get involved in. This will, insha allah, give members a sense of belonging to USMAA and encourage all to do something fruitful and rewarding rather than be eternal whingers and critics.

A VCE Information session organised by the newly established Education Sub Committee (ESC) headed by Sister Ziada Tokhi was held on the 29th of May 2011 in Oakleigh. This was focussed towards the education and future of the children and the youth. The event was well attended and a detailed report with pictures will be published in the next USMAA newsletter. In the mean time parents and children are encouraged to actively participate and support the future activities and programs organized by the ESC.

Two important events/ matters are coming up:

  • The USMAA Annual Dinner in June this year to celebrate 21 years. The organising committee is working hard to get it off the ground. Be there.
  • The USMAA AGM in July this year. There is some succession planning in place. So do not hesitate to attend the AGM and contribute your time and efforts to the success of the Association.

Since USMAA is now 21 years old, the question whether it is time for USMAA to have a place of our own. We have been approached by the Committee of the Afghan Mosque in Doveton to inquire whether USMAA is interested in taking over the Mosque premises plus four adjoining properties. Discussions are going on. There are major costs involved and the community as a whole has to come to the party if we were to venture down this track. If we were to go ahead we will also need a champion to lead the team on this particular project and carry it through successfully. Make dua.

In the meantime, take it nice and easy and enjoy the cool weather. Hope you enjoy the news and photos in this Newsletter.

May Allah shower his choicest blessings on you and your family.

Wassalaam.

Fahmi Haniffa

President, USMAA

Editorial

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakathahu!

2011 has sped past and we are now at the half way mark of the year and also at the end of yet another USMAA tenure. It has been an eventful year so far with activities to encourage greater participation from the community and Alhamdulillah it has been a success and we hope it will continue in the rest of the year to come as well.

USMAA Alhamdulillah celebrates 21 years of existence this year. It has over the years been successful in bringing the Sri Lankan Muslim community together be it for social gatherings, religious events or fund raisings. It has created friendships and created a community that is there with you when you need it. It has been an opportunity for the children to meet and have their own little groups. We now need to think of where we need to be heading Insha Allah in the next 20 years. As much as the "Arab Spring" has been spoken about in the last few months, it is time for the membership to make their voice heard and say what they desire from their leaders and what type of organisation they want USMAA to be. It is also an opportunity for the youth to come forward and shoulder the responsibilities in the future as has been the case this year.

While the uprise in the Middle East is hoped is a good start to making a more Islamic middle east that will stand for its people and Islam and be an example to the rest of the world, we hope that USMAA grows in strength in the coming years Insha Allah.

Australia Sri Lanka Flood relief Fundraiser

Although organized at very short notice, over 250 members and friends gathered at the Mulgrave Community Centre on Saturday the 19th of February 2011, to support the efforts made by United Sri Lankan Muslim Association of Australia (USMAA, Inc) to raise funds for those affected by the recent floods both in Australia and in Sri Lanka.

A power point presentation of the devastating effects of the floods in Queensland and Victoria was followed by an account of the on going struggle in Sri Lanka to cope with the destruction caused to the people by the torrential rains and floods in the Eastern part of the country. The MC for the night Fazlun Haris presented the staggering figures of those affected in Sri Lanka. According to most recent reports more than 1.2 million people were affected by the floods with almost 50 deaths. Damage and destruction to property is overwhelming with over 3,700 homes completely destroyed and another 50,000 or so homes damaged. The damage costs are estimated to exceed US$600 million and the cost of essential commodities such as rice is expected to rise due to the destruction of vast extents of paddy cultivation in the Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts.

The President of USMAA, Dr. Fahmi Haniffa welcomed everyone and thanked the invitees and guests for their overwhelming response despite the short notice. Fahmi mentioned that one of the primary objectives of USMAA is to respond to humanitarian appeals; it was therefore appropriate for USMAA to raise funds via an appeal to the local community so as to assist those who were affected by the scale of the disasters caused by the floods in Australia and Sri Lanka.

The Chief Guest Bandu Dissanayake, the Honorary Sri Lankan Consul addressed the gathering and expressed his pleasure to have the opportunity to attend an event organized by USMAA. He commended the Association for responding to the crisis in Sri Lanka with the flood appeal dinner. He also invited the Association to contribute to the 'Pahana' newspaper on a regular basis so that there would be greater exposure of the activities of the Sri Lankan Muslim Community living in Victoria. The community TV channel would also be available to telecast news about USMAA activities.

This was followed by a speech by the Guest of Honour Mr Nadeem Hussein, member of the Executive Committee of the Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV). Nadeem commended the Association for the relief efforts and referred to the injunctions in the Holy Quran that there is an obligation on mankind to look after each other and that Allah will reward you for your kindness and good deeds.

Funds were also raised through auctions of items donated by members of the community. The vote of thanks was proposed by the young USMAA committee member Fayaz Zurfick. Fayaz thanked the members, friends and donors for having responded generously to the flood relief appeal; and extended a special thanks to the USMAA Management Committee for their great team work in organizing and hosting the function. The evening ended on a pleasant note with a delicious dinner which was enjoyed by all.

The funds raised via the appeal were donated to the Australian Red Cross and the Serendib Fund for Relief and Development, charitable organization in Sri Lanka, (see photos below) to be used in the ongoing flood relief efforts.

7th Annual USMAA Ladies night - A Night to Remember!

On the 26th of March, 2011, the Mulgrave Community Centre was transformed into an enchanting fairy land of glowing pink and black, for the annual USMAA Ladies Night. In keeping with the theme of 'My Fair Lady' the lovely ladies of USMAA and their friends from many communities donned their glamorous gowns, gloves, hats and parasols to add to the fun and festivities of the night.

The event was a fundraiser organized by the Education Sub Committee of USMAA which is launching a drive to raise funds to award educational scholarships to deserving students in Sri Lanka and also to facilitate seminars, workshops and other educational programs for our students here in Melbourne. The VCE high achiever's award scheme will also be implemented where those students in the USMAA membership who received VCE scores of 85% and above in 2010 will be recognized for their achievements.

The two young MC's for the night Shezna Shafeer and Shazma Gaffoor kept the audience enthralled throughout the program with their wit and humour. Mariam Tokhi's introductory video depicted the importance of education in making a difference in the lives of young children, while Shakira Salahudeen eloquently outlined the message and the purpose of the fundraiser.

The highlight of the night was the scintillating dramatic performance by Nilufer as the unforgettable Sri Lankan Prof Higgins who woos the Lankan version of Eliza Doolittle played delightfully by Suharmi Dole. In the supporting roles were Nazreen Dole, Nazha Nazeem and Khadija Haniffa who played their parts to perfection.

A side attraction to the event was the wide array of enticing stalls beautifully displaying clothes, costume jewellery, cosmetics, shoes and many more items that were of special interest to the throng of ladies who attended.

Everyone enjoyed the delicious dinner followed by an entertaining and enthralling session of song and dance where the DJ's for the night Hasna Tokhi and Aysha Zackariya catered to the musical tastes of everyone present. It was indeed a night to remember.

USMAA Janaza Sub Committee update

USMAA Annual Cricket Tournament 2011

The JSC organised the USMAA Annual Sport Day (Fund raising) on Sunday 27th March at Garnut Park Reserve in Wheelers Hill. Many teams participated in the tournament and our young cricketers really enjoyed themselves competing in the correct spirit, for the USMAA Trophy and the other awards. Thanks to Bro Fahme Abul Hassan and our main Sponsor Bro Riaz for their tireless and dedicated organising skills to make this annual event a success. JSC also thanks the several other volunteers for their assistance that day. The event generated approx $1200/- for the Janaza Fund.

Other JSC news

The JSC was for the first time involved in a Janaza that came from overseas and it was a learning experience for us all. However, with the expert guidance of Brother Barakath Ali of ISOMER (www.isomer.org.au) and the support of young volunteers from USMAA, including Brother Hanif Mohamed, the JSC team were able to provide an excellent service to the bereaved family.

Due to Falkner Cemetery still being hesitant in the pre purchase of burial sites in the Islamic Section, JSC will endeavour to overcome this problem in due course with a planned meeting with them later this month.

JSC was also involved in 2 other Janazas from the wider ummath during this time.

In order to better assist the community, we have drawn up a document which outlines procedures to follow in the event of a Janaza. Instructions are in English, Tamil and Sinhala. Please visit the Janaza Sub Committee web page on the USMAA website http://jsc.usmaa.org.au where you can download it.

JSC takes this opportunity to thank the many volunteers and well-wishers, from within and out of USMAA, who are quick to respond to our occasional and varied calls for help with JSC activities.

USMAA Qiraath, Hifdh & Public Speaking Competition - 2011

The annual USMAA Qiraath competition was organized by the USMAA Qiraath Sub Committee (QSC) and was held in April 2011. This year's competition consisted of 3 components (public speaking, hifdh and qiraath), and 2 events- the Qiraath workshop and the Qiraath competition. The event was designed in this format this year to ensure that all participants were not only given the opportunity to showcase their Qiraath skills, but to also benefit and learn from the competition.

The Qiraath workshop was held on the 3rd April at the Mulgrave Neighbourhood House and was run by five Hufaaz (Hafiz of the Quran) from the local community. The Hifdh competition was held on this day, followed by the workshop- where all participants were taught the basic rules of Tajweed.

The Qiraath competition was held 3 weeks later on the 30th April at the Mulgrave Community Centre. This provided participants with adequate time to prepare for the competition by implementing the rules of Tajweed that were taught during the workshop. Both the Qiraath and public speaking competitions were held during this event, and winners of the Hifdh competition (held on the day of the public speaking competition) were also announced. Approximately 60 participants attended the workshop and competition. Alhamdulillah, due to some generous donations, all participants were awarded with certificates, and winners were awarded trophies, cash prizes, Islamic books and clothing.

Member gifts laptop to USMAA

A member of USMAA who wanted to remain anonymous gifted a brand new Acer TravelMate laptop to the organization early this year. It is now being used by the USMAA secretary for record keeping. Having a dedicated laptop for this purpose makes life a lot easier for the administration of USMAA documentation. It will minimize the need for paperwork that amounts to stacks of boxes that get handed down each year to the incoming committee. The USMAA committee wishes to convey our sincere thanks to the donor for identifying the need and supporting us. We also urge the rest of the community to keep up the support and step forward and volunteer in any way possible.

AFIC Press Release 8 June 2011: All of God's creatures deserve compassion and humane treatment!

The President of Muslims Australia (AFIC), Mr Ikebal Patel expressed serious concern and sadness at media reports and images of cruel treatment of Australian cattle in Indonesian abattoirs. Mr Patel stated, "Islam places great importance on the care and consideration of all of God's creatures. It implies a duty to animal welfare, both during the rearing and during the slaughter."

Muslims Australia (AFIC) is committed to animal welfare in Halal accreditation services and has partnered with Halal Kind Meats to reinforce this message. The Halal Kind Meat concept incorporates the interests of rural industry leaders, animal rights groups and AFIC Halal certification services which all realise potential prosperity combined with compassion and good business sense to achieve equitable outcomes for all, said Mr Patel.

Muslims Australia (AFIC) during its National Federal Congress meeting in 2008 called on the Australian Government to cease live exports immediately. AFIC Federal Congress members agreed live cattle/sheep export is traumatic for the animal during the journey and as evidenced, cruel and inhumane and un-Islamic at their destination during slaughter. Muslims Australia (AFIC) again calls on the government to cease live exports and promote Halal slaughter in Australia under the supervision of Islamic authorities and Australian Quarantine and Inspection Services (AQIS).

Mr Patel emphasised the leading and important role Muslims Australia (AFIC) undertakes with the Department of Primary Industry and AQIS to ensure humane and compassionate treatment of all livestock is enforced in order to comply with Halal standards throughout the process of Halal slaughter and the premium status of Australian Meat industry. AFIC calls upon the Federal Government to make available the Australian tax payers funds which are being paid to MLA to be redirected for the purpose of building infrastructure in regional areas of Australia and for local councils to provide crown land so that meat processing plants could once again become a viable proposition in rural and regional areas promoting jobs creation in the struggling country towns. Mr Patel further stated that he would like the Department of Immigration and Agriculture to support a Halal Kind Meats Agriculture training centre to approved asylum seekers, indigenous and indeed anybody living in regional areas. He proposes a leasehold arrangement might be one option for free range farms thus providing a future for regional Australia.

Mr Patel also welcomed and endorsed comments by Mr Lukman Hakim from Indonesia's peak Islamic body, Indonesia Ulema Council (MUI), who stated the inhumane treatment of animals in Indonesian abattoirs is "sinful and would be investigated".
